Before I was contacted to donate my eggs I had booked an appointment with a gynecologist for a consultation with the aim to get an IUD. It took me a stupidly long time to get into the doctor, which is a whole other annoying story. Turns out it was probably good that I wasn't able to get the IUD sooner because I would have just had to take it right back out for the egg donation. I explained to three different people at the Doctor's office that I was donating my eggs. I think I'm getting better at explaining it. And less self conscious about it. I think it's cool and interesting, but I'm never sure how other people will react. I guess maybe I care less about that the more I talk about it. I've realized it's not worth assuming how people will respond. I've noticed that a lot of people are surprised that I volunteered to donate my eggs -- a little less when they realize I might get some money for it -- they seem to assume that a friend asked me to do it. People often seem a little mystified about my motivations.
That's a hard question to answer. I signed up initially for the money. I saw it as a quick cash grab during a desperate time. It being quick was certainly a misconception on my part. Now that I'm not broke It's a little harder to explain. I'm not doing it for the money. The biggest reason I can think of is that I feel like it'll be an interesting and different experience, and I think ultimately that's a good thing for me. And to be completely honest, I'm sort of psyched to spread my genes around.
