Hey, So Claire and I are going Grassphoppin' soon. Here's a video we made:

I’m starting another temp job on the twenty-first. Actually it’s the same temp gig. Now that I’ve decided I’m going back to Edmonton for the summer I’ve become sort of apathetic to the job hunt. Well that and I fucked my foot up. Looks like I’ll be in the West at the end of May. I’m looking very forward to being in my parent’s house. Even if they are going to make me pay rent. Which is sort of annoying since what I want to do is hide from responsibility, but I get their point. Maybe if I convince them that I get the point they won’t charge me rent. Maybe I don’t get it…

Injury Break Down
One thing I’m really good at doing is hurting myself. I’ve managed on many occasions to fall in just the right way to turn what should have been a quick healing cut or bruise into a serious-keep-me-in-bed-for-weeks sort of injury.
The first time was in Grade eight social dance. We were doing that dance called ‘The Butterfly.’ (I didn’t want to try to describe it but I can’t find any videos on youtube, which makes me think maybe it’s called something else. If it’s not on youtube does it really exist at all?). Basically there is a large group of people who split off into groups of three, traditionally one girl who stands in the middle and two boys who stand on either side of the girl. The two boys link arms with the girl. All the groups of three stand in a big circle facing the same direction, and when the music starts everyone moves counter clockwise. The dance moves go: step hop hop, step hop hop, step hop hop; the music changes and everyone stops moving in a circle and the groups of three take turns swinging each other around for a while, then it’s back to the step hop hop routine. As you go along the music gets faster and so all the dancers move faster. I’m told people do this dance a lot at weddings. While doing this dance in grade eight I took a little tumble. I could feel, and I thought I even heard, something in my knee crunch and grind. I hit the ground and yelled ‘FUUUUUCK.’ The gym teachers had to pick me up, put me on a chair, and carry me through the halls to the office (which would have been totally awesome in almost any other scenario). To make things worse there was a big head shaving fundraiser for cancer going on that afternoon in the gym and the entire school was on their way down as I was being carried sobbing through the halls. Turned out I had torn a ligament and broken off three quarters of the cartilage in the right side of my right knee, they had to take it out surgically. I missed something like three weeks of school and couldn’t ride for over six months.
Another time, many years later, it must have been the year after I graduated from high school, Claire and I went to a show (Twin Fangs and 7 and 7 is, I believe) at a bar down town. I wore heals, really little heals, what are, I believe, called ‘kitten heals.’ We ran into a friend from high school who had a bottle of Jager in her car so we went out there and pounded it back (some people hate tequila because it made them puke a bunch once, I hate Jager because of what happened next). At one point Claire and I were going outside to smoke and I missed a step and fell. It hurt, but I was pretty wrecked and so it probably didn’t hurt as much as it should have since I proceeded to pick up (by which I mean lift and carry) a friend of ours in order to get him into the car that was taking him home, after which I walked five blocks to catch a cab. Claire tells me that I was walking behind her and Mike (her boyfriend at the time) saying ‘you guys it really hurts’ and they were like ‘suck it up and stop walking so slow.’ The next morning I woke up with some, what I assume were at some point frozen, peas on my foot. I could tell right away it was bad. I couldn’t put any weight on it at all, and any movement I made with the rest of my body caused me to wince. When I’m in Edmonton I live in the basement of my parent’s house, so what I ended up doing was crawl from my room to the foot of the basement stairs at which point I proceeded to pull myself, using only my upper body, up the stairs, I then poked my head around the corner and yelled ‘Daaad?’ he yelled back ‘What?’ ‘Can you take me to the medi-center?’ Turns out I fractured my foot. The worst part was that this happened at the end of summer, right before Edmonton folk fest, and right before I moved to San Francisco. Luckily I got a walking cast, which looked like a space boot, and allowed me to move around with a little bit more ease.
In my second year of university (my first year at Trent) a disc in my back went out when I was putting my backpack on. It was horrible, my back muscles would spasm all the time, I had to walk around like I had a stick up my ass, and it took me about twenty minutes to get my pants on. The worst part though was that I didn’t know anyone in Peterborough yet, except for my roommate who was extremely unsympathetic and gave me shit for not taking out the garbage (right after my back got messed up, not in general). I was sort of stupid with the injury though, I didn’t miss one class because of it, I remember sitting in the IDST 100 lecture hall trying not to cry while my back spasmed. I had also finally found a part-time job and I went to my first training shift and explained to the girl that was training me what had happened, and that I couldn’t really bend at all, then she asked me to do a bunch of stuff that involved bending…and I did. After that I realized I wouldn’t be able to do another training shift with my back in the shape that it was, so I called the boss, who acted as if I’d tricked him into hiring me. I basically ended up firing myself over the phone while crying in frustration (I later became friends with a girl who got the job after me, and in the interview they asked her if she had any back problems).
The next two serious injuries I sustained were due to drunken dancing. Once at a Birch Heart show the knee I had previously injured went out and I messed up my ligament again, it wasn’t too bad even though it got pretty swollen and I couldn’t wear my skinny jeans. I could hobble around all right though. When my mom took me to the hospital the next day I told the nurse that I’d hurt myself dancing, she asked ‘What sort of dancing do you do? Modern’ at which point my mom chimed in ‘No, drunk dancing.’ Then there was the time I went to visit my friend Jess in Ottawa. We went to a dance party, and stayed until the end. We were on our way to go get food when the DJ announced he would play one more song, so we decided to stick around. About half way through the song I fell. This time it was my ‘good knee’ that had given way. It hurt really really bad, which in my drunken state was a pretty bad sign. We ended up having to call an ambulance. When the paramedics got there they asked me how much I had had to drink and my reply was ‘I don’t know, I’m drunk.’ The hospital was a complete gong show and involved me tumbling out of my wheel chair at one point when I fell asleep, and lots of other ridiculous shit.
So recently I’ve been thinking about how I haven’t injured myself lately, and how that’s odd.
Thursday night Guy came over to my place because I had some whiskey and we’re both sickeningly broke and stressed out about being broke, which makes us want to drink to forget we’re broke, but drinking costs money…etc. So Guy comes over and we drink, our friend is DJing at a bar close by so we go, and I’m drunk enough at this point to not care how broke I am and I buy us a pitcher. Guy and I live in the same part of the city, so we’re walking home together, and I think it’d be fun to run. Which it is (also, don’t you hate it when walking just takes to long?). We run into another Edmontonian, Jasmine, who thinks it’s pretty hilarious that we’re running. After that we walk for a bit, but I decide we should run again, so we do, and then I bite it (it being the ground). Hard. I rip my jeans open and there’s lots of blood coming from my knee, and Guy and I are laughing pretty hard about it. I get up and I can tell something is fucked up with my right foot. We’re really close to my place so Guy drops me off and, after pulling some denim out of my knee, I go to bed and hope that it’ll all be better in the morning. Well it isn’t all better in the morning. My foot, just the top of it, which is weird, is swollen and bruised, green and blue bruised. It looks sort of like the ocean. Anyway, it’s really hard to walk, but not as bad as when I fractured my foot. I’ve spent the last couple days icing it and keeping it elevated and it seems to be improving. Today I even went outside and walked around the block. I’m hoping it’ll be much better in the next two days or so, this is remarkably inconvenient timing since I’m currently looking for a job (yes, again).
Sometimes I feel like I do these things on purpose.

SPRING
It’s supposed to be plus 15 here tomorrow. Guy and I are going to try to find a patio and drink outside. There are few things I like better in life. Guy and I are also discussing moving in together this summer. We’ve both become sort of accustomed to living alone. Guy more so than me since he’s been living on his own for about three years now. Still I think we’d be good roommates, and it’ll only be til May anyway.
I’ve been drafting emails to my landlords about how I’m going to bail on my lease. I should really tell them right away. But I don’t want to.

when it rains...
This day is such a gong show.
I got the job at starbucks. They actually called yesterday and I was sort of wishy-washy with them because they had said they would call me within forty-eight hours of my interview if I had the job. Instead they called me a week and a half later. I had already set up my meeting at the temp agency and wanted to see how that would go before accepting the starbucks job. After I left the temp agency I called starbucks and said I’d take the job because it seemed like the temp work would be pretty sporadic. Then Shaun (temp agency guy) called and told me he had a job for me doing data entry for the MS society. I had to accept or decline right then. So I said yes. The really annoying part is that both starbucks and this data entry thing don’t start til the second week of March.
I just called starbucks and left a message saying I didn’t want the job anymore. I hate this stuff. I rationalize taking the data entry job over starbucks because it’s only six weeks and it’ll give me a different sort of work experience. If I keep working in coffee shops and restaurants my resume will just stay the same. At least this will be with a not for profit organization. Foot in the door. Blah blah blah. I’m stressed. I like the idea of temporary work though. Even if it makes things seem a little unstable. Maybe that’s why I like it though.

Temporary
The temp agency was weird. But it ended on a good note I think. I wore jeans and my salt stained keds. There was another guy there in a full on suit. The receptionist gave me four sheets to fill out. Front and back. The first one was basic information: name etc. but the next three. Oh god. The next three were spot the mistakes and correct the spelling type sheets. It made me feel like I was seriously in the wrong place. I imagined having a meltdown and fleeing the building. Then they had me do a typing test. The whole time all I thought about was Mad Men and Peggy.
Once I was done I met with Shaun. And he was great. He was really friendly and when I was leaving he said “you’re kind of a breath of fresh air.” This made me feel instantly better about not being good at spelling or formatting, it also made me hopeful that he will remember and keep me in mind for upcoming jobs. This Saturday I might be putting flyers on cars. Ten bucks an hour.

jobs jobs jobs
I had an interview the other day for a uppity grocery store. It was a pretty formal, they took me to this big board room even though there were only three of us and asked me questions like “where do you see yourself in five years?” I didn’t have an answer for that one. They called Andrew for a reference too. These people mean business. This morning I’m going to a temp agency for a meeting, on the phone the guy said I’d be there for about an hour. I hope they don’t ask me where I see myself in five years. They’re totally going to ask me that. Starbucks called yesterday and told me I got the job. When I left the original interview I was told I’d be notified in forty-eight hours, it has been about a week and a half. So when she welcomed me to the starbucks team I hesitated and told her I had another interview the next day. I have to tell her by 1:30 today if I want the job. So, basically I have a job. Essentially the same job I had in high school.
I’m house sitting right now, and I had sort of a fitful sleep last night. I woke up a lot but my dreams were all sort of linked, and they got more and more disturbing. They reminded me of dreams I used to have when I was little.

Smart Serve
Is it really that big a deal if I don’t have smart serve?
I miss Alberta where they don’t make you take stupid courses before you’re allowed to serve booze. Not because everyone in Alberta is a crazy alcoholic and we never cut anyone off, but because in Alberta we realize that it’s common sense not to serve people more booze if they’re belligerent or vomiting. Not everything needs to be taught in seminar form Ontario. Chill out.

EMO ALERT
I’m confused. I don’t know what to do now. I don’t have a job, and any job that I would get at this point seems to be the same sort of job I’d be doing if I moved back to Edmonton. It all seems so dumb. I don’t even know what I want. I was filling out a job application the other day for a breakfast restaurant and one of the questions was: “where do you see yourself in two years?” I almost didn’t finish the application because thinking two years ahead makes me want to hyper ventilate. If hyper ventilating was something I did. Where do I want to be in two years? I don’t know. On a beach? I want to have a roof over my head. I want to be able to afford food and beer. Seriously. I don’t want to be rich. I’m pretty happy with scraping by as long as I know I can keep scraping by. I’m all about consistency.

All over the map
Today while I dropped off resumes I fantasized about telling Atef off. In my favourite fantasy I go in on Friday to pick up my last pay cheque and Atef is there. He makes some crack about how I wasn’t really fired and that I can have my job back. To which I reply “Atef, I have too much self respect to work for an unpredictable paranoid alcoholic who treats me and the rest of his staff like shit. So, no thank you.” Then the fantasy diverges, in one scenario I walk out and that’s it. In another he hits me and calls me a cunt and then I tell him I’m going to take his ass to court.
I guess I’m still pretty pissed off at him, and at the whole situation. I’m really worried that I won’t get a job quick enough. I hate that he doesn’t really need me, that ultimately I’m the one who is screwed over in this situation.
In other news. I went to a volunteer orientation thing last night for a therapeutic riding program. It’s in North York and it took me about an hour and a half to get there. But it was nice to be around horses again. I just want to ride! But I guess brushing them and stuff is good enough for now. Does anyone wanna buy me a pony?
The YMCA that I go to just underwent major renovations and everything is pretty much new. Today after I was done working out and changing there was a woman complaining that there were no coat-hooks in one of the lockers. And not just kind of complaining, really complaining. She got one of the staff so that she could show them. And went on to say “this place is driving me crazy.” Lady. Calm the fuck down. They’re COAT HOOKS and its ONE LOCKER that doesn’t have them. Seriously. Another woman and I made eye contact over the whole situation and rolled our eyes. It’s nice when you get to connect with another person about how other people are stupid.
Now I’m looking for job postings on the internet and drinking whiskey (from Alberta). Lots of receptionist work in Mississauga. Booo.

but what now?!
I know that getting ‘fired’ was good, seeing as my boss is an ass, but it’s still scary. I might be back in Edmonton sooner than anticipated. Not a bad prospect, just unexpected.

History Repeats Itself
Well. It was really only a matter of time before it happened again.
I got fired!
This time it was because someone left some ketchup out. I didn’t even know that this was why initially. My boss came in and went into the back. I heard him shouting about something and then he came out front to where Anton and I were doing roll-ups and he pointed at me and then at Anton and shouted each time “You! One Week!” Now in awkward situations I tend to laugh, and it took almost every ounce of will power not to burst out right in his face. I think if I had he would have hit me. Seriously this guy is deranged. My theory is that he was having a bad day and so he went a power trippin’. After he had left one of the customers turned to me and suggested that it would be nice to have people to fire every time you were in a bad mood. Then I made a joke about getting a puppy so that I could kick it when I was in a bad mood. No one laughed (get it, I'm the puppy!).
So I’ve got one week at the pub, and I’ll take it. And it’ll be awkward as hell. And maybe he’ll offer me my job back again, but I won’t take it, because I’m really sick of being treated like shit, and while I do need a job and money there’s only so much crap I’m willing to put up with.
Oh, and incidentally, it was Marcos who left the ketchup and Marcos is the only one who still has his job.

Mystery Food
When I came back to Toronto I found some food that was not mine in my freezer. Frozen peas, frozen raspberries, and a lemon tart. I don’t know where this food came from. I suppose there are two options. One, while I was gone my landlords fixed a light in my place, maybe they had that stuff with them and put it in my freezer and then forgot it. They live upstairs though, so I’m not really sure why they would feel the need use my freezer. Or, two, I told the woman who lives on the main floor that her son could stay in my place while I was away, the son never did end up staying, but maybe she put the stuff in my freezer.
What do I do with it?
What do I do with it?

I have had booze every day this week AND
Last night Caitlin and I went to Sneeky Dee’s. Every Sunday night they have what they call Wavelength. It’s all up and coming bands, and it’s pay what you can. Peterborough is all about pay what you can, and I didn’t realize how few pay what you can events there are in Toronto. Anyway, the show was fun, if a little over run with huge glasses that were clearly not prescription. Also, I thought everything about the 80s but the hair had made a comeback. I was wrong.
What else is up:
I have Mondays off now.
I started volunteering at The Redwood Shelter. http://www.theredwood.com/
I lost the book I was reading (Blood Meridian) and don’t want to buy another copy because I’m sure I’ll find it if I do.
It takes just under two weeks for me to start missing Edmonton.
And that’s about all.

I'm Back
Back in Toronto. Back to my little bachelor. Back to Toronto friends. Back to work and my boss’ erratic behaviour. Back to sending my CV into the abyss. Back to the gym.
It’s good to be back. I like the routine I’ve got going here, for the most part.
