when it rains...
This day is such a gong show.
I got the job at starbucks. They actually called yesterday and I was sort of wishy-washy with them because they had said they would call me within forty-eight hours of my interview if I had the job. Instead they called me a week and a half later. I had already set up my meeting at the temp agency and wanted to see how that would go before accepting the starbucks job. After I left the temp agency I called starbucks and said I’d take the job because it seemed like the temp work would be pretty sporadic. Then Shaun (temp agency guy) called and told me he had a job for me doing data entry for the MS society. I had to accept or decline right then. So I said yes. The really annoying part is that both starbucks and this data entry thing don’t start til the second week of March.
I just called starbucks and left a message saying I didn’t want the job anymore. I hate this stuff. I rationalize taking the data entry job over starbucks because it’s only six weeks and it’ll give me a different sort of work experience. If I keep working in coffee shops and restaurants my resume will just stay the same. At least this will be with a not for profit organization. Foot in the door. Blah blah blah. I’m stressed. I like the idea of temporary work though. Even if it makes things seem a little unstable. Maybe that’s why I like it though.

Temporary
The temp agency was weird. But it ended on a good note I think. I wore jeans and my salt stained keds. There was another guy there in a full on suit. The receptionist gave me four sheets to fill out. Front and back. The first one was basic information: name etc. but the next three. Oh god. The next three were spot the mistakes and correct the spelling type sheets. It made me feel like I was seriously in the wrong place. I imagined having a meltdown and fleeing the building. Then they had me do a typing test. The whole time all I thought about was Mad Men and Peggy.
Once I was done I met with Shaun. And he was great. He was really friendly and when I was leaving he said “you’re kind of a breath of fresh air.” This made me feel instantly better about not being good at spelling or formatting, it also made me hopeful that he will remember and keep me in mind for upcoming jobs. This Saturday I might be putting flyers on cars. Ten bucks an hour.

jobs jobs jobs
I had an interview the other day for a uppity grocery store. It was a pretty formal, they took me to this big board room even though there were only three of us and asked me questions like “where do you see yourself in five years?” I didn’t have an answer for that one. They called Andrew for a reference too. These people mean business. This morning I’m going to a temp agency for a meeting, on the phone the guy said I’d be there for about an hour. I hope they don’t ask me where I see myself in five years. They’re totally going to ask me that. Starbucks called yesterday and told me I got the job. When I left the original interview I was told I’d be notified in forty-eight hours, it has been about a week and a half. So when she welcomed me to the starbucks team I hesitated and told her I had another interview the next day. I have to tell her by 1:30 today if I want the job. So, basically I have a job. Essentially the same job I had in high school.
I’m house sitting right now, and I had sort of a fitful sleep last night. I woke up a lot but my dreams were all sort of linked, and they got more and more disturbing. They reminded me of dreams I used to have when I was little.

Smart Serve
Is it really that big a deal if I don’t have smart serve?
I miss Alberta where they don’t make you take stupid courses before you’re allowed to serve booze. Not because everyone in Alberta is a crazy alcoholic and we never cut anyone off, but because in Alberta we realize that it’s common sense not to serve people more booze if they’re belligerent or vomiting. Not everything needs to be taught in seminar form Ontario. Chill out.

EMO ALERT
I’m confused. I don’t know what to do now. I don’t have a job, and any job that I would get at this point seems to be the same sort of job I’d be doing if I moved back to Edmonton. It all seems so dumb. I don’t even know what I want. I was filling out a job application the other day for a breakfast restaurant and one of the questions was: “where do you see yourself in two years?” I almost didn’t finish the application because thinking two years ahead makes me want to hyper ventilate. If hyper ventilating was something I did. Where do I want to be in two years? I don’t know. On a beach? I want to have a roof over my head. I want to be able to afford food and beer. Seriously. I don’t want to be rich. I’m pretty happy with scraping by as long as I know I can keep scraping by. I’m all about consistency.

All over the map
Today while I dropped off resumes I fantasized about telling Atef off. In my favourite fantasy I go in on Friday to pick up my last pay cheque and Atef is there. He makes some crack about how I wasn’t really fired and that I can have my job back. To which I reply “Atef, I have too much self respect to work for an unpredictable paranoid alcoholic who treats me and the rest of his staff like shit. So, no thank you.” Then the fantasy diverges, in one scenario I walk out and that’s it. In another he hits me and calls me a cunt and then I tell him I’m going to take his ass to court.
I guess I’m still pretty pissed off at him, and at the whole situation. I’m really worried that I won’t get a job quick enough. I hate that he doesn’t really need me, that ultimately I’m the one who is screwed over in this situation.
In other news. I went to a volunteer orientation thing last night for a therapeutic riding program. It’s in North York and it took me about an hour and a half to get there. But it was nice to be around horses again. I just want to ride! But I guess brushing them and stuff is good enough for now. Does anyone wanna buy me a pony?
The YMCA that I go to just underwent major renovations and everything is pretty much new. Today after I was done working out and changing there was a woman complaining that there were no coat-hooks in one of the lockers. And not just kind of complaining, really complaining. She got one of the staff so that she could show them. And went on to say “this place is driving me crazy.” Lady. Calm the fuck down. They’re COAT HOOKS and its ONE LOCKER that doesn’t have them. Seriously. Another woman and I made eye contact over the whole situation and rolled our eyes. It’s nice when you get to connect with another person about how other people are stupid.
Now I’m looking for job postings on the internet and drinking whiskey (from Alberta). Lots of receptionist work in Mississauga. Booo.

but what now?!
I know that getting ‘fired’ was good, seeing as my boss is an ass, but it’s still scary. I might be back in Edmonton sooner than anticipated. Not a bad prospect, just unexpected.
